ProjectThumbnails-03.png

This project researches phobias and cognitive behavioral therapy to find a way to make dealing with phobias easier and more exciting. According to research in phobias and anxiety, around 9.1% of Adults in the United States are affected by a specific phobia, while 7.1% are affected by a form of social phobia. Out of people that have phobias, around 22% are affected severely in their everyday lives. Through the development of posters and a discussion based playing card game, this project creates a fun and engaging experience that allows users to grow more comfortable in discussing their feelings and lessens the impact of their phobias on their day to day lives.

IDEA CREATION

This project would begin in the spring semester of 2024 at the University of Georgia and would be created as a response to a senior graphic design capstone brief:

"Design can address society’s most pressing global concerns and issues on various scales.Capstone students will consider graphic design’s potential impact through at least one of thefollowing lenses: (1) translation, (2) collaboration, (3) inclusion, (4) advocacy. Through extensive research and ideation, students will apply their ideas to a specific user, audience, and/or community."

My ideation process would involve a lot of searching. Through mind-mapping, sketching, discussion, and personal reflection, I would eventually come to the conclusion to address the issue of phobia utilizing my design and illustration skills.

RESEARCH

With idea in mind, research would be the logical first step. Utilizing an array of primary and secondary resources, I would gather information on phobias and the process of cognitive behavioral therapy. Sources would include:

Books

Articles

Survey Results

Interview

POSTER & CARDS

The deliverables of this project included one 18" x 24" poster as well as a process book. The card game would be created as response to the realized need for an interactive component that would more appropriately address the phobia issue.

The poster making process would include rounds of sketching and printing. The poster would be an introduction to the coming card game and mirror the playfulness.

This is what the final poster would end up looking like.

The card making process would involve a very heavy amount of sketching. The goal would be to create phobia cards that players could use as a part of the game.

The phobia cards would act as a form of exposure to certain phobias during gameplay. As such, they would be heavily illustrated compared to the accompanying rule cards. Creation would include:

Creating illustrations...

Designing a border...

And creating a little character to relate to.

All of this preparation would result in this:
