“A night of horrors brought back to life through the big screen and experienced from the comfort of your own car” is the description for the theoretical event known as the Die-In Drive-In. The event was thought up for the sake of an assignment focusing on developing wireframing skills and learning the ins and outs of adobe xd. This assignment tasked students with coming up with an event to create a promotional poster, website, and app for it with a focus on keeping a consistent branding system.

POSTER SKETCHING

The poster sketching process was fairly straightforward. The base concept for the poster design was derived from the name which came before any design could begin. As the name was derived from a play on words, combing “Dine-In Drive-In” with the word “Die” (Not so subtly implying the horror element), the poster would also be a play on the name.

Many variations would be made exploring different outcomes within a similar theme. Some would use more lifelike renders of the skull while others would be more graphical. Different logo explorations would influence the overall design and eventually color explorations would lead to many similar results in an attempt to hone in on a style.

POSTER RESULT

This would be the final poster. The skull would be simplified greatly for clarity with a 3D effect and playful logotype to create a lighthearted feel for the event, creating a sense that this would be for all ages.

With the poster finished, I now had basic style guidelines:

  1.   ITC Avant Garde as a main typeface

  2.   Aktiv Grotesk for boy type

  3.   A solid, warm color palette with cyan accents

  4.   Solid black lines

  5.   Simplified shapes

This would be developed and refined as I worked on the website, but this provided the basis for the websites style.

WEBSITE

The website would provide basic information for the event including location and movie selections, a shop for basic merchandise, and a platform to purchase tickets for the event.

With a messy wireframe in place, I had finally finished my first website mockup.

APP

The app would be a simpler process with the experience from creating the website now in place. It would also be a simpler version of the website, serving a similar purpose but providing more accessibility to anyone interested.

This is what the final app would look like.

With the poster, website, and app all completed, the project came to a close. This would teach me about branding and forming style guides from my designs as well as provide a basis for wire-framing and prototyping for web and mobile.
